On 5 August 2025 Proxmox released Proxmox VE 9.0, the series jump that takes the platform to Debian 13 “Trixie” with kernel 6.14.8-2 as the stable default.
Snapshots on shared LVM
The feature people had been asking for over years: snapshots on thick-provisioned shared LVM storage. In plain terms, the scenario of anyone with an array over iSCSI or Fibre Channel who until now went without snapshots on precisely the most expensive infrastructure they owned.
It is also the gap most visible when comparing with vSphere during migrations from VMware, where SAN snapshots are taken for granted.
Fabrics in software-defined networking
The SDN layer adds fabrics: it allows building considerably more complex and scalable network topologies than the bridge-and-VNet configuration of the previous series. It is the piece that makes a large cluster with networking managed from Proxmox itself viable.
Affinity rules in high availability
The new affinity rules give control over how machines and containers are spread across a high-availability cluster: keeping together the ones that talk to each other a lot, or separating those that must not fail at the same time. It is the equivalent of the affinity and anti-affinity rules on other platforms, and one of the most frequently cited gaps.
What is underneath
QEMU 10.0.2, LXC 6.0.4, ZFS 2.3.3 and Ceph Squid 19.2.3. The upgrade comes from 8.4, along the path documented by Proxmox.
