The system Jean-Louis Gassée built from scratch in the nineties for multimedia work: aggressive multithreading, a database-backed filesystem and a responsiveness that embarrassed the competition on modest hardware. Apple nearly bought it in 1996 and bought NeXT instead. Haiku has been rebuilding it ever since.
